Philosophic Classics: From Plato to Derrida.Forrest E. Baird & Walter Arnold Kaufmann - 2000 - Routledge.
This anthology of readings in the survey of Western philosophy--from the Ancient Greeks to the 20th Century--is designed to be accessible to today's readers. Striking a balance between major and minor figures, it features the best available translations of texts--complete works or complete selections of works-- which are both central to each philosopher's thought and are widely accepted as part of the canon. The selections are readable and accessible, while still being faithful to the original. Includes Introductions to each historical (...)

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Nietzsche in the Light of his Suppressed Manuscripts WALTER KAUFMANN SINCE THE EIGHTEEN-NINETIES there has been considerable discussion about the adequacy of the editing of Nietzsche's late works, and occasionally bitter polemics about suppressed material have appeared in German newspapers and periodicals as well as in a few books. In the mid-fifties the controversy was revived in the wake of a new three-volume edition of Nietzsche's works, (...)

    Nietzsche; a Collection of Critical Essays. [REVIEW]E. D. - 1973 - Review of Metaphysics 27 (1):160-161.
This collection of twenty-one essays presents a comprehensive, well-rounded picture of Nietzsche’s influence upon philosophy generally, and upon morals, psychology, and literature in particular. Fourteen of the essays have been previously published. To students of Nietzsche the most familiar of these fourteen will be two selections from Walter Kaufmann’s Nietzsche: Philosopher, Psychologist, Antichrist—"The Death of God and the Revaluation," and "The Discovery of the Will to Power;" a discussion of perspectivism from Arthur Danto’s Nietzsche as Philosopher; Hans Vaihinger’s (...)

Patients’ Beliefs About Deep Brain Stimulation for Treatment-Resistant Depression.Ryan E. Lawrence, Catharine R. Kaufmann, Ravi B. DeSilva & Paul S. Appelbaum - 2018 - American Journal of Bioethics Neuroscience 9 (4):210-218.
Deep brain stimulation is an experimental procedure for treatment-resistant depression. Some results show promise, but blinded trials had limited success. Ethical questions center on vulnerability: especially on whether depressed patients can weigh the risks and benefits effectively, whether depression causes “desperation,” and whether media portrayals create unrealistic hopes. We interviewed 24 psychiatric inpatients with treatment-resistant depression, qualitatively analyzing their comments. Most had minimal interest in deep brain stimulators. Some might consider them if their depression worsened, if alternatives were exhausted, or (...)

George Berkeley: critical assessments.Walter E. Creery (ed.) - 1991 - New York: Routledge.
During the past thirty years, scholars and commentators have produced a flood of articles and books on almost every aspect and feature of Berkeley's work. There are, however, very few points on which these commentators agree. Since the debate shows no signs of abating, Walter Creery has gathered together a collection of the more significant articles in this extremely useful and accessible form. These three volumes gather together eighty-seven articles on Berkeley's views on the central issues of the philosophy (...)

    Evictionism and Libertarianism.Walter E. Block - 2014 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 39 (3):248-257.
There is a new sheriff in town on the abortion question. It is called evictionism. It diverges, philosophically, from both the pro-life and the pro-choice positions. It assumes that the birth of a human being starts with the fertilized egg but claims that the unwanted baby is a trespasser that may be evicted in the gentlest manner possible.

    Rawls, the difference principle, and economic inequality.Walter E. Schaller - 1998 - Pacific Philosophical Quarterly 79 (4):368–391.
Rawls’s theory of justice has been criticized for allowing individuals by their own voluntary choice to make themselves members of the ‘least advantaged’ class and thereby eligible, albeit undeservedly, for the benefits mandated by the Difference Principle. I argue, first, that this criticism overlooks the fact that the Difference Principle applies only to the lifetime expectations of representative persons and, second, that it is possible to implement the Difference Principle (and the social minimum) through policies that do not create work (...)
